With the proposal, subsequent publication and entry into force of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), the scope of the original Ecodesign Directive was extended from energy-related products to all physical products and also their components and intermediate products.
In addition, with the ideas of dual transformation (sustainability and digitalization) in mind, the Digital Product Passport was introduced as a future tool for fulfilling the reporting requirements of performance and information requirements for the respective regulated product groups. The Digital Product Passport (DPP), if designed horizontally and implemented in a sector-specific manner, can make an important contribution to shaping the green and digital transformation.
It offers the possibility of storing important information about a product in digital form and making it easily accessible to other economic operators and authorities. The DPP is also increasingly being mentioned outside the ESPR in proposals from the European legislator, reports and dossiers. The technical implementation of the DPP is to be described using harmonized standards and the legal and technical requirements are to be laid down in an associated standardization mandate.
The main tasks of the working group WG Digital Product Pass – DPP – Regulation and Standardization are initially:
- Monitoring the regulatory negotiations on the DPP under the ESPR
- Monitoring standardization work at the national level (DIN/DKE), European level (CEN/CLC) and international level (ISO/IEC)
- Monitoring a possible revision of the New Legislative Framework (NLF) in the context of the DPP
- Coordinating and setting up new projects and releasing publications and position papers.
The Working Group WG Digital Product Passport – DPP – Regulatory and Standardization is thus the overarching informative, strategic and organizational working body for the Digital Product Passport in the VDMA.
The Digital Product Passport – DPP – Regulatory and Standardization Working Group has two sub-working groups (SWG):
SWG Digital Product Pass – DPP – Positions
SWG Digital Product Pass – DPP – Publications
