Hartmut Rauen: "Ban on combustion vehicles is a ban on thinking"
The EU Parliament's decision to de facto ban the internal combustion engine has far-reaching consequences. After all, the internal combustion engine is not only used in cars, but also in many fields of application such as agricultural engineering or the construction industry, where this technology will still be needed for a long time to come. Climate-neutral solutions such as synthetic fuels argue in favor of continuing to use combustion engine technology alongside the expansion of electromobility, emphasizes Hartmut Rauen, Deputy Managing Director of the VDMA. Instead, with this decision, Europe is putting its technology leadership and also jobs at risk and making itself further dependent on countries such as Russia or China, which supply the raw materials for the electronic powertrain.
