On December 3, 2024, our last meeting under the direction of Mr. Carsten Henriksen took place as a face-to-face event in Frankfurt am Main.
A central topic continues to be the implementation of 8100-1/-2 (Safety rules for the construction and installation of passenger and goods elevators), which takes up a large part of the resources in CEN/TC 10. These standards are due to be published by the end of 2025.
In addition, there was a detailed review of the key points from the 41st plenary meeting of CEN/TC 10 (CEN for elevators, escalators and moving walks), which took place in Rome on November 20 and 21, 2024. The main topics this year were regulatory issues in Europe, such as the citation of harmonized standards in the Official Journal of the European Union or the impact of the new Machinery Regulation and the Cyber Resilience Act on standardization for elevators and escalators.
The current status of the survey on the revision of the Lifts Directive can now be viewed on the following EU Commission website: https://single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/sectors/mechanical-engineering/lifts_en
The aim is obviously to transform the Lifts Directive into a Lifts Regulation by 2027 in order to harmonize the different implementations in Europe.
An important point at our last meeting was the imminent shutdown of the “2G network”. According to the report, Deutsche Telekom plans to switch off the 2G mobile network completely by June 30, 2028. An estimated 400,000 elevators in Germany will be affected by this shutdown and will have to be converted by June 30, 2028. Conversion to other radio networks depends on the manufacturer and the components required. A working group will be set up to provide members with precise information and instructions for action. This will analyze the requirements and, if necessary, develop suitable instructions or a VDMA leaflet. The results will be presented at the next meeting.
Other topics relating to “Building requirements, GBU, BA 017, TRBS 1115-1 and cybersecurity as well as the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health” were also discussed in detail.
In addition, reports relevant to the Technology and Standardization Committee were presented on the following topics: ELA Energy&Environment Committee, ELA Legal Committee, VDMA AuF Committees and VDI activities.
The next meeting will take place as a presentation event on February 27, 2025 in Frankfurt am Main.
