Necessity and further efficiency potentials

"Electric vehicles don't need a transmission" - this statement is often heard. In fact, however, a transmission is integrated in most currently available electric vehicles, albeit a non-shiftable one. This is because adjusting the speed-torque characteristics of the drive via a transmission is also necessary and advantageous for electric vehicles. beyond simple non-shiftable transmissions, however, shiftable transmissions (with a low number of gears) also offer considerable potential for reducing the energy requirements of electric vehicles, which, depending on the vehicle class and usage profile, amounts to approx. 5-15% compared to a fixed gear ratio.

In the FVA seminar "Transmissions in Electric Vehicles", the basics of transmission technology from conventional to hybrid and electric vehicles will first be reviewed. On this basis, current solutions of transmissions in electric vehicles will be discussed and their necessity will be shown. Looking ahead, the potential of multi-speed electric vehicles will be shown and current research on this topic will be summarized.
