Green products and systems from the mechanical and plant engineering sector offer enormous potential: in the OECD and BRIC countries, up to 30 gigatonnes of CO₂ equivalents could be saved every year. The product carbon footprint (PCF), which records all of a product's greenhouse gas emissions over its entire life cycle, plays a key role here.

While Scope 1 and 2 emissions only make up a small proportion of total emissions, Scope 3 emissions - i.e. emissions from upstream and downstream processes - pose one of the biggest challenges. Complex and often non-transparent supply chains make it considerably more difficult to record these emissions. Although generic standards exist for PCF calculation, they often fall short of the specific requirements in mechanical and plant engineering.

To close this gap, the VDMA is undertaking several projects to develop product-specific methods for calculating the PCF, known as Product Category Rules. These are based on ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol and are intended to support companies in the structured and specific determination of PCF, make the calculation comparable and embed it in European standardisation efforts. This is also happening in particular with regard to the Ecodesign Regulation and with a focus on scope 3 accounting.

But sustainability does not end with the carbon footprint. Companies increasingly need to take a holistic view of ecological, social and economic aspects - for example with regard to resource efficiency or sustainable procurement. The PCF calculation can serve as a starting point for systematically developing further sustainability measures and making them measurable.

At the event, we will give you an overview of the VDMA guideline and use a specific practical example from BEKO TECHNOLOGIES GmbH to show how a company approaches the topic of systematically recording sustainability activities. In a subsequent workshop, we will discuss the biggest challenges together, share experiences and identify opportunities relating to carbon accounting. The event will conclude with an exclusive factory tour at BEKO TECHNOLOGIES, which will provide participants with exclusive insights into the practical side of things.

Bring your questions and take the opportunity to engage in intensive dialogue with colleagues and the speakers.

Moderation: Kevin Löpke
Registration deadline: 24/06/2025

A few days before the event, registered participants will receive a confirmation of participation and the technical details of the online tool, including a dial-in link.

If you are unable to attend despite having registered, please send us a short message.

In the interest of an efficient dialogue, we have limited the number of participants. Registrations will be considered in the order in which they are received.

Participation in the event is free of charge.

Organizer
The event is organized by ProduktionNRW. ProduktionNRW is the cluster for mechanical engineering and production technology in North Rhine-Westphalia and is organised by VDMA NRW. ProduktionNRW sees itself as a platform for networking, informing and marketing companies, institutions and networks with each other and along the value chain. Significant parts of the services provided by ProduktionNRW are subsidised by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
