The European Union is increasingly relying on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting to support also the targeted promotion of circular economy measures. A key methodology used for this pur-pose is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which evaluates GHG emissions across the entire product life cycle.
However, there are methodological challenges with LCA that can result in inconsistent assessment outcomes. This is particularly challenging for evaluating material cycles and circular economy measures for products with long service lives—such as systems and components of the energy transition.
Against this background, the “Kreislauf-E-Wende” research project, funded by the Federal Minis-try for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, has developed methodological procedures and prac-tical guidelines that guarantee the reliability of the calculation specifically for the area of the circular economy and improve the transparency and acceptance of the LCA assessment methodology.
The symposium “Life Cycle Assessment and Carbon Footprint in the Context of the Circular Economy” is targeted at professionals from companies, associations, and academia. It will showcase the approaches developed in the Kreislauf-E-Wende project along with a practical guideline designed to support the implementation of LCAs and carbon footprints in companies.
Drawing on keynote speeches from EU policy and industry, the conference will also offer a plat-form to discuss the relevance and challenges of standardized assessment for LCA and GHG emissions, particularly in the context of current Green Deal policies such as the Digital Product Pass-port.
