This year everything is different, Corona has the world firmly in its grip and our VDMA Industry Meeting Mining, announced for 19 November 2020, will take place as a virtual event via GoToMeeting from 4 p.m. to around 6 p.m. We cordially invite you to this meeting.

We have entered the year 2020 with the expectation that we will at least be able to maintain our sales. After production and sales had developed very well in 2018 and 2019, new business and thus incoming orders already declined at the end of 2019, contrary to expectations. However, trade conflicts such as the dispute between the USA and China, the crisis in the Middle East and the never-ending brexite drama overshadowed economic concerns. When Corona hit with full force, all our thoughts about the economic development became obsolete. The state of the industry and the opportunities we see for overcoming this situation are part of the report on the state of the economy.

Digitization is one component of the strategies to emerge from the crisis. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gisela Lanza, Member of the Executive Board of the wbk Institute for Production Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), provides insights and prospects in this area. There, Prof. Lanza heads the Production Systems Department, which focuses on global production strategies, production system planning and quality assurance in research and practice. One focus of her work is the data-driven planning and control of production networks. Prof. Lanza is an active member of the scientific advisory board of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and the national platform Industry 4.0, as well as the Steering Committee of the Alliance Industry 4.0 Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Finally, in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Mining Technology at the RWTH Aachen, we will experience the presentation of the winning group. The 1st Mining Techathon will take place within the High-Performance Mining Conference of the RWTH Aachen University. Groups of students from the Universities of Aachen, Bochum, Clausthal, Freiberg and Leoben work out solutions for a planning task from the mining industry within three days.

We are planning the following schedule:

4 p.m.

  • The situation of the industry in the Corona year 2020
(Dr. Michael Schulte Strathaus, Chairman and Members of the Executive Board of VDMA Mining)

  • Productivity and flexibility in the value chain through industry 4.0
    (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gisela Lanza, KIT)
Short break

5 p.m.

  • Presentation of the winning group of the Mining Techathon at the HPM 2020

To help us plan better, please use one of the links above to let us know by 13 November 2020 whether you can participate or are unable to attend.

Participants will receive the dial-in link to the event prior to the Industry Meeting.
