INMEX SMM India was created by merging the two previously competing trade fairs INMEX India and SMM India. Both predecessor fairs had taken place in Mumbai every two years, most recently in 2013 in April SMM India (for the 3rd time) and in October INMEX India (for the 8th time). SMM India was a foreign subsidiary of the world's leading maritime trade fair SMM (Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology International Trade Fair Hamburg) organized by Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. INMEX India, organized by the English company Informa Exhibitions, recently reached about twice the size of SMM India in terms of visitor and exhibitor numbers, but due to the limited market for both events it was not possible to achieve a size that was attractive to international exhibitors.

The merging of the two shows has allowed INMEX SMM India, which is also held biennially in odd-numbered years, to quickly develop into South Asia's most important maritime congress trade show.

According to the organizers, more than 260 exhibitors and sub-exhibitors from 23 countries presented themselves to more than 6,300 trade visitors at the last presence event in 2019 (in early 2022, it was held only as a digital trade fair).
