The mechanical and plant engineering sector, like other industries, is suffering from the shortage of skilled workers, which is primarily caused by demographic developments and will become even more acute in the coming years. The options for responding to this in a timely manner are limited. There are no simple solutions; companies, politicians and society need to take action in various fields.
From training and continuing education, increased thinking in terms of potential, addressing new target groups, using new recruiting channels and types, better marketing and communication, improving employer attractiveness, striving to keep employees in work longer, and recruiting workers from abroad, no field of action should be left out. Discussions about a possible extension of working hours or the introduction of a 4-day week, as well as about making working conditions more flexible, must also be continued.
