In the "Wood Working as a Service - WOODaaS" research project, five partners from industry and research are working on a usage-based business model for woodworking.

The term "Everything as a Service", or XaaS for short, describes the idea of offering and using all services and products as a service. XaaS offerings are attractive to users primarily because of their cost efficiency, while providers of XaaS solutions benefit from regular revenue and strong customer loyalty. This strategy emphasizes data-based solutions and interaction between stakeholders, which creates a high level of motivation for both providers and users. The X-Forge project series investigated how a comprehensive XaaS concept can be consistently implemented in production. The WOODaaS sub-project focuses on developing a usage-based business model for woodworking with five partners from industry and research.

Woodworking machines are often significant investments for small and medium-sized companies in the woodworking industry in Baden-Württemberg. Due to limited financial resources, many companies rely on low-cost, low-tech machines from Asia. In order to remain competitive and still be able to use state-of-the-art technologies, a new business model is being developed that allows customers to pay for the machines flexibly according to usage. This reduces their capital commitment and increases their liquidity. This practical solution reduces overcapacity and makes better use of existing resources, making an important contribution to the sustainability of the woodworking industry.

WEINIG, a manufacturer of woodworking machines, is developing a prototype XaaS service (Everything as a Service) with a pay-per-use business model for its planing and moulder machines. The software is modular and uses open source technology to enable easy scaling and adaptation to other woodworking technologies. Fraunhofer IPA is supporting the development of the business model, the identification of service requirements and the implementation of end-to-end processes.

The results of this sub-project will be presented at this final event. We cordially invite you to participate online at MICHAEL WEINIG AG.
