Additive manufacturing of components in critical application areas presents many hurdles for users of the technology. Often starting with the lack of a normative basis, which is very important in such regulated areas, increased attention must be paid in particular to the special circumstances associated with the new manufacturing processes. Many standards for general application in industry have already appeared at ISO level. Initial guidelines and standards have been published for the aerospace and medical technology sectors, as well as for the energy sector. First drafts and procedures for the regulated area of the Pressure Equipment Directive have already been defined and can already be applied with the appropriate qualification. A certified material/semi-finished product manufacturer can already supply the industry with pressure-bearing components compliant with the European Pressure Equipment Directive [Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU (PED)]. Particularly in the spare parts and small series business, additive manufacturing processes offer a serious alternative to conventional processes.
