On March 4, 2024, the EU Parliament, the Council and the EU Commission reached a compromise on the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The new regulation, which will replace the EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC, is expected to come into force by the end of the year and take effect 18 months later.
The EU Packaging Regulation aims to harmonize the handling of packaging and its waste in all EU member states. Specifically, the aim is to protect the environment by preventing or avoiding packaging waste. The basic idea behind this is the circular economy and the associated waste hierarchy. This states that the highest priority is to avoid waste. Otherwise, it should be prepared for reuse or recycled. If this is not possible, other types of recovery such as waste incineration and disposal can be considered. At the same time, it is important to ensure that packaging waste is handled in a way that is not harmful to health.
Although the EU Packaging Regulation creates a certain degree of planning security for the mechanical and plant engineering sector, it can be assumed that the industry will be burdened by technical weaknesses and unrealistic requirements in the regulations. In particular, the significant expansion of the reusable quotas for industrial packaging compared to the Commission's original draft, which was negotiated into the compromise text at the last minute, certainly rather unintentionally, poses a challenge.
In the virtual exchange of experiences, we will look at both the EU packaging regulation and the specific effects on mechanical and plant engineering.
The virtual event is aimed at specialists and managers from the fields of environment, sustainability and management.
Moderation: Alexandra Dreyer and Kevin Löpke
Registration deadline: 27.05.2024
A few days before the event, registered participants will receive a confirmation of participation and the technical details of the online tool, including a dial-in link. If you are unable to attend despite registering, please send us a short message.
In the interest of an efficient dialog, we have limited the number of participants. Registrations will be considered in the order in which they are received.
Participation in the event is free of charge.
Organizer
The event is organized by VDMA Nord and ProduktionNRW. ProduktionNRW is the cluster of mechanical engineering and production technology in North Rhine-Westphalia and is organized by VDMA NRW. ProduktionNRW sees itself as a platform for networking, informing and marketing companies, institutions and networks with each other and along the value chain. Significant parts of the services provided by ProduktionNRW are funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
