As the backbone of industry and factory supplier to the manufacturing world, mechanical and plant engineering plays a decisive role in increasing prosperity and employment in its own country on the one hand and enabling the imperative ecological transformation on the other.

A digital and sovereign industry needs easily accessible and end-to-end data networking and a willingness to exchange data multilaterally. To this end, cooperative and new models of collaboration must be developed to enable data-based solutions and new digital business models on a broad scale. An important prerequisite for this is trustworthy data ecosystems based on open standards that guarantee digital sovereignty for companies and the economy.

The cross-industry initiative "Manufacturing-X" mentioned in the German government's digital strategy implements the Industrie 4.0 data space, enabling value networks to be redesigned and respond quickly to disruptions, new business models, a closed-loop economy, and efficiency gains, as well as driving digital innovation to secure and expand the leading global position of German industry.

In order to accompany, support and drive interoperability in the production worlds and in the entire Industrie 4.0 or digital transformation ecosystem, the VDMA has founded the Machine Information Interoperability department. In addition to accompanying working groups and creating OPC UA Companion Specifications, the department monitors and accompanies the constantly growing interoperability landscape and is thus the first point of contact in VDMA for different and new interoperability solutions.

In the first part of this Connect2Discover@VDMA episode, you will get an insight into what exactly this is all about, where we are right now and where we want to go in the next few years.

In the second part, you will get an overview of the variety of services offered by our "Machine Information Interoperability" department.
