"I don't do organic" - Why biointelligence affects the entire mechanical engineering sector
In the face of increasingly scarce resources and rising demand, as well as the fulfillment of sustainability goals, it is worth taking a closer look at nature. Because it is the highest form of self-optimization. Mechanical engineering is already inspired: The lotus effect, for example, is a much-used bio-inspired achievement. What is new, however, is that not only sectors that are already familiar with natural materials - agriculture, medicine, food - are coming into contact with biologization, but biotechnology is crossing these boundaries. This is because it affects both materials management (what we work with) and production technology (how we work). Packaging made from algae or the use of biosensors to determine the shelf life of products are just a small part of the areas of application.

Biointelligence goes one step further: it not only combines technology with biology, but also adds information technology. This is how the famous CRISPR/Cas gene scissors, Elon Musk's Neuralink or data storage using DNA are created. These examples already show that the possibilities are not only endless, but also overarching - and therefore relevant for the entire mechanical and plant engineering sector.

Biointelligence may still be an unfamiliar word to you, but the next big transformation is hidden behind the expanded use of biotechnology and information technology in mechanical and plant engineering. Did you know, for example, that biotechnology was already being considered for Industry 4.0?
Biointelligence in mechanical and plant engineering not only offers expanded fields of application for technologies and a new race for market leadership, it also has the potential to revolutionise the entire way we produce. So what are the key technologies? What are the most important markets? Where are the fields of research? And what could biointelligence look like in Germany in 2040? You'll get a glimpse of all that on April 16th at VDMA Industryday: Biointelligence.

Background information on InBenBio
VDMA Services GmbH is currently conducting an international benchmark on biointelligence and related concepts (e.g. bio-convergence, biorevolution, biologicalization) with its partners Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Hohenheim. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is intended to form the basis for an internationally networked research and value creation landscape.
The aim of the study is to systematically record and analyze global activities (from research, business and politics) in the field of convergence of biotechnology, hardware and software for innovative, sustainable products and production processes (biointelligence). Lead countries and target markets are identified and their opportunities, obstacles and potentials are analyzed and highlighted. Find out more about the project here.

The VDMA Industry Day: Biointelligence
The results will be presented for the first time at the VDMA on April 16th. In addition to the relevant findings for the industry, participants will have the opportunity to ask their questions, network with each other and learn practical values from companies that are already dealing with biointelligence and its potential in practice.

The program download can be found below.

Registrations will be accepted up to and including Participation is free of charge. Catering will be provided.
