"Von der Leyen now deserves support"

European industry counts on a strong and effective policy in Europe. The pro-European forces must therefore work together with the next President of the European Commission on a constructive political agenda for the EU.

The European Parliament today voted in favour of Ursula von der Leyen as the new President of the European Commission. Thilo Brodtmann, Executive Director of the VDMA, comments:

In times of growing political and economic uncertainty, European industry is counting on a strong and effective European policy. After her election, Ursula von der Leyen deserves the support she needs to fulfil her role in the interests of the EU as a whole. The pro-European forces in the European Parliament should use their majority to jointly advance a constructive agenda for the next five years. From the industry's point of view, these include the completion of the Digital Single Market, a determined trade policy and transparent and global approaches to climate policy issues. In the long term, the EU should also learn from the mistakes of the past European elections and place the process of leading candidates on a solid foundation so as not to lose the trust of European citizens in the long term."
