Mechanical engineering companies raise warnings against new protectionism and trade barriers
Mechanical engineering companies in Germany are campaigning tirelessly for open markets and free trade around the globe – no ifs or buts. They expect the German federal government to vigorously combat protectionism and the establishment of new trade barriers.

The United States of America is the largest market for German machinery exports after the EU. The results of the US presidential election are thus subject of great concern in the mechanical engineering industry.
Breaking even in September
Incoming orders in mechanical engineering in September were on a par with those in the same month of last year. Domestic orders saw an increase of two percent (rounded), while orders from abroad stagnated.
VDMA: Stagnation followed by a slight increase in growth
Despite all the difficulties on many important foreign markets, mechanical engi-neering companies expect a slight upturn in their business in the coming year.
Automation is not a threat to the labour market
A recent study by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on the future of jobs examines changes in the labour market up until 2020. “We certainly do not share the bleak vision described in the study,” says VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann.
