The 4th VDMA Flash Survey on China shows that the business situation for more and more mechanical engineering companies is improving. At the same time, challenges in the competitive situation remain and entry restrictions to China are a hindrance.
Export-oriented mechanical engineering industry needs strong industrial fairs
Strong  international industrial fairs are important platforms that contribute significantly to strengthen the global competitiveness of the mechanical and plant engineering industry. The VDMA therefore supports the efforts of the German government to welcome more trade fair visitors and exhibitors to Germany again.
VDMA demands honest revision of social costs
According to press reports, social contributions are to increase above the 40 percent guarantee of the federal government. VDMA General Manager Thilo Brodtmann therefore demands a review of social spending.

Orders received by the German machine tool industry in the first quarter of 2017 were 6 per cent up on the previous year. Domestic demand rose by 2 per cent, while overseas orders grew by 8 per cent.

In 2016, the fuel cell industry in Germany achieved a turnover of around EUR 100 million from fuel cell heating devices and power supply systems. Following a lateral movement the previous year, the economic outlook of the VDMA Fuel Cells working group forecasts a growth of 90 percent for the current year based on an industrial survey. Manufacturers can be very optimistic about 2017.

In 2016, German manufacturers of construction equipment achieved a turnover of 9.3 billion euros which is an increase of 3 percent compared to 2015. Within the same period world sales of construction equipment declined by 1 percent.

In the fourth quarter of 2016, order bookings in the German machine tool industry fell by four per cent compared to the preceding year’s equivalent period. Both exports and domestic orders showed a roughly equal decline. For 2016 as a whole, the rise came to seven per cent, with orders from abroad up by ten per cent, while domestic orders ended up at plus/minus zero.

The German machine tool industry is in an optimistic mood as 2017 gets under way. “For the current year, we are anticipating significant growth in production output of three per cent,” says Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Prokop, Chairman of the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), speaking at the organisation’s annual press conference in Frankfurt am Main.
