VDMA: Mechanical engineering achieves production record of EUR 199 billion in 2014

German machinery and plant manufacturers are confirming the production forecast of 1% for 2014 that they first issued in the summer. “In the first ten months of the year, production of machinery and plants in Germany was up 1.0% year-on-year in real terms. We are therefore very optimistic that we will achieve our forecast,” explained VDMA President Dr Reinhold Festge at the Association’s annual press conference in Frankfurt on Thursday.

On 3 December, Commissioner Oettinger explained his plans for Industry 4.0 in Europe at an event in the permanent representation of Baden Württemberg in Brussels together with VDMA’s former president, Manfred Wittenstein, who expressed his view on the future of mechanical engineering.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) free trade agreement between the European Union and the USA has polarised society. The mechanical and plant engineering industry welcomes the planned creation of a large economic area without tariff barriers, but with common regulations and standards for more than 800 million people. In a series of interviews, the VDMA gives representatives from the various sub-sectors of mechanical engineering the chance to have their say about TTIP.

VDMA: Fall in the rouble makes future unpredictable

18/12/14 The depreciation of the rouble and a lack of investment activity have been impacting German mechanical engineering companies’ business in Russia since mid-2013. In the first three quarters of 2014, mechanical engineering exports to Russia fell by 16% to EUR 4.9 billion. The current fall in the rouble significantly exacerbates the situation for mechanical engineering firms operating in Russia and means that investments are unlikely to pick up in the near future.
