Research and Innovation in the Mechanical Engineering Industry
German machinery manufacturing takes place in highly innovative companies. Its above average commitment to research and innovation is represented in the respective statistical figures.

Economic Situation

After the turbulent development of incoming orders over the previous year, the figures for January 2018 are like an ice-cold shower, with a decrease of 29 percent compared to January 2017. Although this is partly due to a statistical base effect – a very high index value was determined for incoming orders in January 2017 – 2018 has not started well.
With an increase of 26 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, the growth rate of incoming orders remained high at the end of 2017. Unfortunately, the turnover in December fell short of the strong figures from the previous year. The Federal Statistical Office reports a 6.8 percent increase in the production of mining machinery for the first three quarters of 2017.
In 2017 the demand for labour rose significantly. The last time the number of additional job offerings was as high as present has been in 2007.
VDMA raises its 2017 growth forecast for the German robotics and automation industry from 7 to 11 percent.
