Many mechanical and plant engineering companies are once again looking somewhat more sceptically at the coming months. According to a new VDMA survey, only 18 percent of companies expect a return to the sales level of 2019 as early as 2021.

The 4th VDMA Flash Survey on China shows that the business situation for more and more mechanical engineering companies is improving. At the same time, challenges in the competitive situation remain and entry restrictions to China are a hindrance.
Export-oriented mechanical engineering industry needs strong industrial fairs
Strong  international industrial fairs are important platforms that contribute significantly to strengthen the global competitiveness of the mechanical and plant engineering industry. The VDMA therefore supports the efforts of the German government to welcome more trade fair visitors and exhibitors to Germany again.
VDMA demands honest revision of social costs
According to press reports, social contributions are to increase above the 40 percent guarantee of the federal government. VDMA General Manager Thilo Brodtmann therefore demands a review of social spending.
EU climate targets: "Innovation and market forces instead of regulation and tax money"
Efforts for climate protection must be increased. However, the proposal for greenhouse gas reduction now presented by the EU Commission shows considerable weaknesses in European climate policy.

VDMA and ZVEI, together with 20 companies from the mechanical and electrical engineering industries, have founded the "Industrial Digital Twin Association" (IDTA) as a user organization for Industrie 4.0. The aim of the association is to bring together the parallel development strands towards the industrial digital twin and to develop it as an open source solution together with the member companies.

The VDMA has been accepted into the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance. This European organisation which was established by the EU Commission just a few weeks ago is to play a central role in the future in the market ramp-up and large-scale use of climate-neutral hydrogen in Europe. Orders received by the German machine tool industry in the second quarter of 2020 were 46 per cent down on the same period last year. In the process orders from Germany fell by 36 per cent. 51 per cent fewer orders were received from abroad. In the first half of 2020, the level of orders fell by 35 per cent. Domestic orders were 28 per cent lower than in the previous year. The level of orders from abroad was reduced by 39 per cent.
